Sightseeing Information
Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall
Looking down on the Port of Hakodate from the heights above, the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a beautiful bilaterally-symmetric colonial style building constructed in 1910 and painted in a distinctive blue-gray and yellow color scheme. At the time of it's construction, the Public Hall was the height of modern architecture and is known today as the landmark of the Motomachi area.
In 1911, the building was used to accommodate HRH the Crown Prince on a visit to Hokkaido on behalf of the Taisho Emperor, and distinguished guest rooms, a nearly 200 square meter grand banquet hall and other memorabilia of the gorgeous atmosphere of the time remain to this day. With this long and distinguished history, the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall was designated as an important cultural asset of Japan in 1974.
