Sightseeing Information
Lake Toya
Toyako Onsen is the number 3 hot springs area in Japan in terms of hot water volume, one of Hokkaido's leading resort areas and attracts many tourists. Located within the borders of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Lake Toya is a caldera lake born from the crater of an extinct volcano. Additionally, Toya and neighboring Lake Shikotsu are famous for being the northern-most lakes in Japan that never ice over. The name Toya comes from the Ainu words for "lake" and "hill".
A scenic overlook and grain silo observation platform on the way from JR Toya Station to the hot springs area offer spectacular views and are a definite must-see and the nearby Showashinzan volcanic lava dome and Mt. Usu are some of the most popular sightseeing spots in all of Hokkaido.
Long-Run Fireworks Display
Lake Toya's Long-Run Fireworks Display is held nightly starting at 8:45PM from the end of April through the end of October every year. During the nearly 20 minutes of each performance, a multitude of brilliant explosions of color light up both the night sky and the surface of the lake with their reflections. In addition, in 2007 the Kohan Tei hotel installed private foot baths allowing guests to soak away the day's travels while viewing the fireworks.
