Sightseeing Information
Shirakinu Riverbed
An extraordinary formation of natural beauty, the Shirakinu Riverbed magnificently ornaments the Osaru River as it flows through Kitayuzawa Onsen. Covered in a layer of green rock formed from volcanic ash and seemingly spread with a rainbow colored carpet of reds, greens, pinks and yellows, the riverbed is truly a spectacular sight.
Access: Osaru River, facing Meisui Tei
Sankaidaki Falls
Sankaidaki Falls are located at a point roughly 200m away from where the Osaru River and its upstream tributary the Sankaidaki River meet.
Ravine walls close in on each other to a point only 8m across and cradle a large, nearly 5m wide three-tier waterfall (where waters actually surge down five tiers if one looks closely). The autumn colors of the area surrounding the falls are famous as some of the most beautiful in Hokkaido and a "Totem Pole Hill" can be found within the neighboring Sankaidaki Park. Thanks to a sister city relationship with the town of Lake Cowichan, Canada, many of these totem poles are authentic Canadian imports and as a symbol of the love of nature, they gently connect the hearts of those who visit the area.
